India Heritage Sites

India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world having vast ancient and cultural heritage of its own. It is a country of different beliefs, faiths, doctrines and cultures. The heritage in India can be attributed to performing arts, crafts, religion, customs, traditions, beliefs, philosophy, history, travel, cuisine, monuments, literature, painting and languages. The country’s rich heritage contains the temples, caves, monasteries, museums, monuments, forts, and palaces etc. This heritage reflects the influence of prevailing cultures. India has seen many invasions and this have largely affected what India today is. Aryans, Greeks, Romans, Phoenicians, Arabs, Afghans, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese and British visited the country and as the time passed, they assimilated the very culture of India. This amalgamation of different cultures made the Indian art and culture so vibrant which is still reflected in the forms of historical monuments and other architectures that have been built over time.



UNESCO has given world heritage status to around 27 sites in the country and 12 sites out of them are located in North India. These heritage sites are the source of attractions not only for the domestic tourists but also for the international tourists. Taj Mahal of Agra is the heritage site that has been included the Seven Wonders of the World. One of the masterpieces in today’s world, it was built by Shah Johan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Other world heritage Sites includes some of the world famous Ajanta, Ellora and Elephanta Caves, Sun temple, Khajuraho temples, Fatehpur Sikri and Darjeeling railway to name a few.
