A. R. Rahman, one of the most renowned music composers was born in Chennai as A.S. Dileep Kumar. In the year 1989, Rahman got converted to Islam, which was the religion of his maternal side. Rahman is a multi-faceted genius and has made contributions in various fields of life. He is most widely known as an Indian music composer and a song writer. He is also a singer and produces music. He can play various instruments brilliantly and he is also said to a philanthropist. All these qualities make him a complete human being. He has won the recognition of being one of the highest paid composers of the motion picture industry.

A. R. Rahman is lovingly called the “the Mozart of Madras” for his extensive contribution for film music and stage music. He has other great titles to his credit. The Tamil fans of Rahman have given him the nickname “Isai Puyal”, which is English means “Music Storm”. Times listed Rahman in its list of World's Most Influential People In 2009. Similarly, the UK-based World Music magazine Songlines has addressed him one of “Tomorrow's World Music Icons” in the year 2011. His national and international fame continue to spread its wings as he composes one after another musical jewel.

One of his outstanding compositions was in the form of the album Vande Mataram released on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Indian Independence. Rahman’s musical genius speaks volumes from the fact that he can compose Carnatic music and Western classical music with the same proficiency and adeptness as he composes Hindustani music or Qawwali form of Hindi music. His other contributions include jingles for ads, official theme song for 2010 Commonwealth Games, a world tour named A. R. Rahman Jai Ho tour, and even Airtel ringtone.

He has won two Grammy Awards and two Academy Awards at 2009 Oscars. He has also won a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe Award. His list of receiving awards goes on and on. Rahman has won four National Film Awards and thirteen Filmfare Awards South. He has innumerable other awards and nominations to his credit apart from these most popular ones mentioned above.
