Live Christmas tree care

There are various basic steps to care for your Christmas tree for it to give a fresh look throughout the season as long as possible. Here are some useful Christmas tree care tips:

  • Choose a fresh and healthy green tree while it is still rooted and check the needles if they are flexible or not and that not too many of these needles are falling off

  • Clear the place to erect your tree and that chosen place should be away from sources of heat such as fireplaces, heaters, heating vents, direct sunlight or open flames to prevent the tree from withering prematurely

  • Place a plastic mat or a skirt on the floor before placing the tree to protect the floor from getting scratched and spoilt

  • In order to facilitate water absorption by the tree trunk, cut an inch or so from the base. It will also help the tree base to fit on the tree stand.

  • Mount the tree on the cradle within eight hours of cutting it down to prevent it from drying and withering away. Maintain a steady provision of water in the base of the tree thereafter. A well-watered plant poses less risk of drying away and also is less dry and combustible and poses less risk of catching fire.

  • Check for insect eggs or critters before you mount the Christmas tree indoor. Also spray anti-desiccant or anti-wilt chemicals to minimize needle loss and also loss of moisture from the tree.

  • Make sure your tree is mounted straight and vertical and secure its base with rocks and pebbles

  • If you are using a lot of electric cables in lighting up your Christmas tree, make sure that the cables are in absolute perfect condition and not frayed at the edges. This would ensure that there are no sparks and unnecessary chances of fire. Also turn off the lights at night or while not in house.

  • Also check on the overflowing waters from the tree stands or sap leakage periodically to avoid floor and furnishing from getting stained.

  • Periodically also clean the surroundings of the fallen needles to have a clean and sparkling look all around.

Artificial Christmas tree care

Artificial Christmas trees do not need much care except that you need to prevent it from falling or tearing or pulling or rough handling. They need to be packed in sealed containers or bags once the festive season is over, to be taken out again the next season for reuse.
