Income Tax website www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in crashes as pan card link to aadhar card online last date approaches

The Income Tax Department website www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in just crashed today as people are in a hurry to link their PAN number with Aadhaar card. Last date to link PAN to Aadhaar is June 30. Many users reported that the site was not opening or taking very long time to open. The www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in website home page was opened but the Aadhaar-PAN linking page is taking too long to open. Some people have also reported that the captcha is not showing up which is mandatory to complete the PAN-Aadhar link.

Aadhaar Card is issued by the UIDAI - Unique Identification Authority of India to all the Citizens of India. PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a ten-digit alphanumeric number provided by the I-T Department to a person, firm or entity. Govt. of India has made mandatory for all people to link PAN with Aadhaar.

If an individual’s income is below exemption limit but if he/she has both PAN and Aadhaar cards, it is mandatory to link PAN with Aadhar by June 30. The Government made mandatory for all people having a permanent account number (PAN) as on June 1 to link it with their existing 12-digit biometric Aadhaar number.

Now the amended Indian income tax rules states that the government has made compulsory the quoting of 12-digit biometric Aadhaar at the time of applying of permanent account number (PAN). Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had made Aadhaar Card mandatory for filing income tax returns from now onwards by an amendment to tax proposals in the Finance Bill for 2017-18.

As per Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, every person who has been allotted PAN as on July 1, 2017 and who is eligible to obtain Aadhaar Number shall intimate the same to the tax authorities before a date to be notified by the government.  Aadhaar and PAN linking is now made mandatory for filing income tax returns, opening of bank accounts and financial transactions over Rs 50,000. An individual who is applying for a new PAN card must also quote their Aadhaar number as it is now mandatory.
