The Demographics of India are diverse. India's population of more than one billion people comprises approximately one-sixth of the world's population. 2.4 % of the world’s land area is occupied by India and it supports over 17.5% of the whole world population. India has more arable land area in the world except the US.
India has been projected to be the most populous city by the year 2025. 50% of Indian population is below the age of 25. By the year 2020, it has been projected that the average age of Indian population would be 29 years. India also presents a huge diversity in terms of income and education. Major portion of the wealth is concentrated in the hands of a very few people making them too rich and on the other hand a huge percentage of population (22%) still remains below the poverty line.
The population growth rate is 1.548%. Unemployment rate is around 7.8%. A huge 72.2% forms the rural population. This means most of the Indian population lives in villages.
According to the 2001 census, the literacy rate of Indian population of age 7 and above is 71.7%. And between ages 15 to 25 is 81.4% of the total population.
Majority of the people living in the country are Hindus with 80.5%, Muslims with 13.4%, Christians with 2.3%, Buddhists with 0.8%, Jains with 0.4%. More popular religions include Sikhs, Zoroastrians, Jains Bahá'í and Jews.
A huge percentage of the Hindu Indian population, about 43% has their spoken language Hindi. The other major language spoken in the rest of the country comprise Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada and Punjabi. Of the entire Muslim population of India, 45% speak Urdu while the rest speak other languages. The Christians mostly speak Malayalam and Tamil. An overwhelming 1,652 languages and dialects are spoken across the length and breadth of India.
