Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves : Introduction
Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, situated in Maharashtra, is considered as one of the most wonderful art example of India’s ancient heritage. It comprises rock-cut monuments and dates back to second century B.C. They are considered to be the finest examples of Buddhist religious art.
Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves Architecture
Ajanta Caves consists of 29 rock cut cave monuments that dates back to the 2nd century B.C. Ellora has 34 caves that dates back to between 6th and 11th centuries A.D. Ajanta has Buddhist caves while the caves of Ellora contain traces of Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu religions.
Significance of Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves
Ajanta Caves are primarily known for their exquisite paintings. These caves contain panels that depict tales from the Jatakas, which is a collection of fables based on the reincarnations of the Budhha. There are as many as 29 caves and these caves were built to serve as places of retreats of the Buddhist monks. Here the monks taught and also performed the religious rituals.
Ellora caves are better known for their architectural superiority. There are as many as 34 caves and are dedicated to Hindu, Jain and Buddhist faith. These caves resemble ideal places for meditation and worship. They are carved out of basaltic hill sides and are the finest examples of cave temples.

Entry timings are 9 A.M. to sunset with Ajanta Caves closed on Mondays and Ellora caves closed on Tuesdays.
Best time to visit Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves
The best time of the year to visit the caves is from November to March as it cool and dry. Monsoons should better be avoided.

By Air: Aurangabad is the nearest airport to Ajanta and Ellora Caves and is connected with all major cities of India.
By Railway: Aurangabad railway station is around 45 minutes away from the Ellora Caves and Jalgaon railway station is around 1.5 hours journey by road from Ajanta Caves.
By Road: Good roads connect the caves to the nearby cities and taxis can be hired for travelling.
