Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee celebrations

Her Majesty, The Queen, had her coronation on 2 June, 1953 after she sat on the throne on 6 February, 1952. The Silver Jubilee was celebrated with huge fanfare at the completion of 25 years in 1977 and similarly her Golden Jubilee was held in 2002 after completing 50 memorable years. In 2012, she will be celebrating her Diamond Jubilee after completing 60 glorious years of her reign. Full-fledged preparations are going on in a highly organized and meticulously planned manner.

Highlights of the Diamond Jubilee function

Diamond Jubilee function will be held during the mid week spanning June 2 to June 5, 2012 and shall be coordinated by Buckingham Palace. This Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth shall be marked by regional and overseas visit by The Queen and the Duke of Edinburg covering England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Island.

Bank holidays and school closures in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland have already been announced in honor of the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee 2012 celebrations. An official emblem has been chosen for The Queen's Diamond Jubilee through a national competition for children between the ages 6 and 14. The winning design was by Katherine Dewar (10 years), who hails from Chester. This emblem shall be used widely throughout the celebrations for advertising and commercial purposes.

Special guidelines have been published for the use of Diamond Jubilee souvenirs, such as, photographs, effigies, portraits and engravings. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a special way in which Canada honors The Queen and this award will be awarded to about 60,000 citizens and permanent residents of Canada on the basis of their contribution to their country and countrymen.

Diamond Jubilee 2012 Events

  • June 2 – The Queen is planning to attend the Epsom Derby.

  • June 3 – The fourth annual Big Lunch shall be held. In the afternoon of the same day, nearly one thousand boats will muster on the River Thames at high water in preparation of the Queen to lead the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. There will also be a Diamond Jubilee celebration at Battersea Park. Tickets are still available for the Festival at Battersea Park scheduled for June 3. In this festival, design, music, art, film, fashion and food of the past 60 years shall be showcased.

  • June 4 - Diamond Jubilee concert shall be held at the Buckingham Palace and is being organized by the BBC. This concert will also be attended by the Duke of Edinburg and other members of the Royal Family. Diamond Jubilee concert tickets were available through application till Friday March 2 and tickets have been already allocated. Currently, Diamond Jubilee concert public ballot has already closed. Lighting of Queen Elizabeth diamond jubilee beacons all over the world has been planned on this day. This is to commemorate Her Majesty’s 60 years of reign over UK and her position as the head of Commonwealth.

  • June 5 – The Queen shall attend a national Service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral along with other members of the Royal Family. Diamond Choir shall be formed through audition of children from all over UK. These lucky children aged between 10 and 13 will get the opportunity to sing at the Service of Thanksgiving as part of the Diamond Choir. They will sing a song composed particularly for this special occasion of Queen’s Jubilee 2012. After the Thanksgiving ceremony, The Queen shall attend a reception at Mansion House along with The Duke of Edinburgh. The other Members of the Royal Family will simultaneously attend a reception at Guildhall.  They will then all be attending a lunch at Westminster Hall. Thereafter they will travel to Buckingham Palace in a Carriage Procession route and appear on the Balcony after which the RAF Flypast will take place.

Diamond Jubilee website

On the occasion of the Queen Diamond Jubilee, a Diamond Jubilee website has been launched by the Royal Household. The website contains two new photographs of The Queen. It also includes the most recent updates on the Queen’s reign. You can also visit the website for all the latest news and photographs apart from announcements and brief historical information on the 60 years of the Queen’s rule. The website also has provision for sending congratulatory messages to The Queen for interested souls and avid followers of The Queen.

To mark the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, The Queen has made a speech to Parliament on March 20 and accepted a gift of stained glass window that shall be kept in the Westminster Hall. There would be also a Diamond Jubilee Pageant comprising a brilliant display of dance, music, military and equestrian performances from May 10 to May 13. There is also a Parade and Muster at Windsor planned on May 19 in which around 2,500 troops from Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Royal Army will take part. After the parade, they will muster in the Castle ground.

Queen Elizabeth Jubilee exhibition

To celebrate the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee, there will be an exhibition at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Holyroodhouse by the Royal Collection. Royal River: Power, Pageantry and the Thames has been opened in April by the National Maritime Museum. An exhibition of images will be held by the National Portrait Gallery. Further, there will another exhibition of the portraits of The Queen by Cecil Beaton held by Victoria and Albert Museum.

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Trust

Diamond Jubilee celebrations also saw the launch of a new charitable trust called the The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust. People are invited to contribute for the trust for a genuine cause. Also, in the year 2010, the Jubilee People’s Millions Competition was launched by Big Lottery Fund that will grant a substantial £3.6 million to local community projects. The winners have already been announced in 2011. Even environmental projects such as The Jubilee Woods Project were launched by The Woodlands Trust. An ambitious plan of creating a 460 acre of woodland along with various other woodlands by planting six million trees was conceptualized.
