International Women’s Day 2018

International Women’s Day 2018

When is International Women’s Day 2018 and what is it?

International Women’s Day is held every year on March 8. International Women’s Day(IWD) is a worldwide event that celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievement of women all around the globe and calls for gender equality. International Women’s Day started to come in the shape since the early 1900s and it aims to bring together governments, women's organisations and charities.

International Women's Day History

This day of Women's is marked around the world with various arts performances, rallies, networking events, talks, conferences and marches by women and men alike. Google Doodle also celebrate womanhood and featured women and girls from the world who complete the sentence ‘One day I will’, a talk about their dreams and ambitions.

The first National Woman’s Day was observed in the US on February 28, 1909  in accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America in honour of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.

A woman named Clara Zetkin, leader of the ‘women’s office’ for the Social Democratic Party in Germany – tabled the idea of an International Women’s Day in 1910. Her suggestion that "every country should celebrate women on one day every year to push for their demands" was agreed in a conference of more than 100 women from 17 countries and thus IWD was formed. The women's day was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on March 19, 1911.

International Women’s Day can be traced to the year 1908, when women in New York, nearly 15,000 marched for voting rights, shorter working hours and better pay. Since then, woman's day has been seen  organised on various dates in different countries but came the year 1913 and it was almost decided that March 8 would officially be known as International Women’s Day.

This women's day was only recognised by the United Nations in 1975 and since then a theme is created for each year for the celebration of womanhood. The first IWD was officially recognised in 1911, and International women's day centenary was celebrated in 2011. So, in the year 2018, it is 107th.

Is there an International Men’s Day?
Like Women's day, International Men’s Day is an international event celebrated on November 19 every year in over 70 countries. International Men’s Day 2018 focus on men’s and boy’s health, promoting gender equality and celebration of men's positive achievements and contributions all around the world.

International Women's Day Theme For 2018

A concept called National Woman's Day soon spread to different countries and then came into being International Women's Day. Every year the International Women's Day organizers set out a theme for the annual celebration of Women's Day. So you may want to know What is the International Women's Day 2018 Theme?

The International Women's Day 2018 theme is #PressforProgress. Last year's theme was #BeBoldForChange. The theme is appropriate and challenge stereotypes and gender bias and inequality, campaign against violence, forge women's advancement, celebrate women's achievements, and champion women's education. This women's day 2018 theme reflect many people who have come together in protest and have marched for change and gender parity.

International Women's Day 2016 theme was #PledgeForParity campaign which helped women and girls achieve their ambitions and challenge their own bias.

International Women's Day is declared an official holiday in many countries of the world. The United Nations official theme for International Women's Day 2018 is “Press for Progress for achieving gender equality and empowerment for all women and girls, ensuring inclusive and quality education for all, and promoting lifelong learning.

On the day of International Women's Day 2018, Women’s March organizers organize events in support for women. Women who wish to support the campaign can also wear the color red in solidarity with "A Day Without A Woman."

Do we need to Celebrate International Women's Day?

The Original aim of Happy Women's Day to achieve full gender equality for women in the world has still not been realised yet. A gender pay gap still is there across the globe and women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics. As per the data available, women’s education, health and violence towards women is still worse as compared to men.

World Economic Forum says the gender gap won't close until 2186. So, there is a long time ahead. On the IWD or International Women's Day, women all over come together and join hands to realise the world to recognise these inequalities of women as well as celebrating the women achievers.

IWD Celebration across the world

Many countries celebrate IWD in different ways. IWD is declared an official holiday in a number of places including: Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal (for women only), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia.

Some countries celebrate it in a similar way to Mother’s Day with men presenting their wives, girlfriends, mothers and female  friends with flowers and gifts.

Women across the world are planning to go on strike on March 8, including eight renowned feminist activists. Angela Davis, Linda Martin Alcoff, Cinzia Arruzza, Nancy Fraser, Barbara Ransby, Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, Rasmea Yousef Odeh and Tithi Bhattacharya will all take part in the strike calling out ‘leab-in feminism’ and ‘corporate feminism’.

We all need positivity in life and if you do it on a daily basis, you are encouraging a wife, a mother, a sister, a co-worker or a friend to be herself and this in turn you as a men will also improve in your attitude towards life and particularly women.

3. Be Kind - Be kind to yourself and to all others. Show your kindness to Women or offer and celebrate it with others.

Advocate For Yourself - As a woman, you must not forget on International Women's Day 2018 to advocate for yourself in workplace with a co-worker/boss or at home with your partner, tell them about your needs. You need to fight for equality and you would not get it simply on a plate. You must raise your own voice.

8. Remind yourself for Women's Contributions in your Life - Remind yourself and others about the contributions a women has made in your life - You need to remind yourself as well as other people of the important things that women have contributed in your life as well as the world. Have you thought how you were raised as a children?, so called women's work like cleaning, cooking, etc. are often ignored and overlooked. Do you know how much suffering your mother has got when you were a child?

9. Support Women Practically - If you are an employer, simply giving a flower or gift to a woman you think is awesome, you could consider in creating fair wages for women, and support causes that promotes equality.
