When is Kuwait National Day, Kuwait National Day Date
Kuwait National Day marks the day when Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah ascended to the throne in 1950. Kuwait National Day is celebrated on 25 February every year. As Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah played a very important role in Kuwait’s independence, he is honored by the Kuwait National Day and thus it's an important public holiday.
Kuwait National Day History
Kuwait was previously a small fishing village in the 17th century. As Kuwait was worried of an invasion by the Ottoman Empire who was the powerful force in Eurasia at the end of the 19th century, the government of Kuwait thought that it required assistance from a European power.
Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah ascended to the throne of Kuwait in the year 1896. Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah started modernising Kuwait with first major project of Berlin-Baghdad Railway in an effort to compete with the Ottoman Empire. Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah also formed an alliance with the Britishers to secure his government’s investments. British government finally came into an agreement with the Kuwaiti government in 1899. After this alliance, Kuwait was a British protectorate. Thus, Kuwait’s resources and royal family was secured from any external threats.
Britain recognised Kuwait as an independent emirate in 1914. Kuwait initially relied on occupations such as herding, fishing, and shipbuilding. To industrialize and update Kuwait’s economy, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah created the Kuwait Oil Company with investments from Britishers and Americans.
Kuwait Oil Company exported oil for the first time in 1946. As the wealth of Kuwait Govt. increased, they launched many modernisation and infrastructure projects. Shiekh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah started talks with the Britishers to wipe out the 1899 protectorate agreement. Thus a new Friendship Agreement with the British was established. Under this agreement, Britain and Kuwait vowed to maintain friendly ties and protectorate agreement was dropped completely. Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah drafted a new constitution that recognised Kuwait’s independence in 1961. Thus Kuwait became fully sovereign country.
Kuwait Liberation Day: February 26
Apart from Kuwait National Day, Kuwait celebrates its Liberation Day every year on 26th of February. Kuwait Liberation Day is a public holiday celebrated in honor of the country’s independence from Iraq after the first Gulf War. Kuwaiti people celebrate the day with great pride.
The Iraq government tried to took advantage after the release of Kuwait from British protection. The Arab League, comprising of Arab nations in Southwest Asia and Northeast Africa sent troops to secure and defend Kuwait from Iraq’s attack. Thus Iraq was forced to stop and give Kuwait complete independence coinciding the with Arab League’s recognition of Kuwait independence in July 20, 1961.
